Instructional Setting: Classroom

The goal of the Anger Management Program is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to identify what triggers anger in individuals, how to control anger and how to diffuse anger in others.

At the completion of this class, participants will:

Explain the origins of anger using the Anger Response Model.

Self-assess the conditions which will activate the anger response.

Explain the typical pattern of responses to threatening situations.

Describe how to control the anger response.

Describe and demonstrate the techniques to diffuse anger in others.

Explain the Origins of Anger:

Participants will learn that anger is a response to a perceived or real threat and that while physiological responses are automatic, emotional responses can be controlled and managed with proper techniques.  Participants will explore how anger is displayed differently among different people and the need to become more aware of the anger response in self and others.

Self-assess the conditions which will activate the anger response:

Participants will complete several short checklists and assessment exercises to determine the conditions under which their anger response can be triggered.

Explain the typical pattern of responses to threatening situations.

Participants will learn there are typical patterns of responses to threatening situations and they will identify their pattern and the consequences of their pattern.

Describe the actions to take to control the anger response:

Participants will learn techniques for controlling their anger response.

Describe and demonstrate the techniques to diffuse anger in others.

Participants will learn techniques to diffuse anger in others and handle threats to well being.

The program will include individual assessments and small group activities during which participants will discuss their experiences and reactions.  At the completion of the class, each participant will be asked to sign a statement to make one change about how they will control their anger in the future.
