In our Coaching Workshop, we demonstrate The 2 Minute Challenge Technique from a great training video, “The Practical Coach” by Media Partners.  Here’s the technique:

1.     State what you observed.

“Mary, I noticed you were a half hour late this morning. This is the second time this week.”

2.     Wait for a response.

“Traffic was tied up on the beltway again so what could I do?”

3.     Remind the employee of the goal.

“Mary, when you’re late, other people have to fill in for you and take your phone calls. It means extra work for the other people who are here on time and that’s not fair to them.  So I need you to be here on time from now on.”

4.  Ask for a solution.

“What can you do differently tomorrow to be here on time?”  (Don’t move on without a solution.  If the employee isn’t willing to offer their ideas, provide your solution.)

5.  Agree on the solution.

"So, starting tomorrow, we agree that you will leave a half hour earlier so you can be here on time from now on… Thanks Mary.”
